Knitting History - The Origin of Knitting

Knitting is a technique of making fabric from yarn on two or more needles. The word "weave" comes from the word "knot". Knitted fabrics are made from wool, silk, and other fibers.

In the 1920s, Belarusians who had lost the civil war fled to China and showed the craft of weaving to Chinese caravan men who used camel hair as a weaving material.

During World War II, the British wartime government department, Information, started operations to get people to make winter knitwear for the Army and Navy. With wool in short supply, they encouraged people to take apart old unwearable wool items so they could reuse the wool.
