Summary
Most people ignore the care of knitted socks. Here are some tips for taking care of your knitted socks to help them last as long as possible.
Most of us didn't grow up learning to take care of clothes, just tossing them in the washing machine and then putting them on the clothesline to dry or tossing them in the dryer. Not to mention cleaning knitted socks. Here are some tips for taking care of your knitted socks to help them last as long as possible.
1. Wash your knitted socks in cold water.
You should use cold water on your socks, whether you wash them by hand or by machine. This will help prevent the color from fading and avoid unnecessary stress on the fibers. Using very hot water will cause natural fibers to break down more quickly. Washing socks doesn't require a lot of heat, and the heat may actually cause permanent staining.
2. Don't get too excited about washing your knitted socks.
This means you usually have two wash options. The first is hand washing. The second is to put your sock in a bag and run it through the washing machine and wash it using a gentle cycle, agitation, soap, etc. However, do not rub too hard and agitate your sock, this may deform it.
3. Drip dries your knitted socks.
No matter how you wash your hand-knit socks, it's very important to keep them out of the dryer if you want to avoid hurting them. You can buy a bamboo collapsible rack for drying socks. This rack also works great with activewear with a high spandex content, anything made from linen, and anything I want to be extra careful with.
4. Don't go out with only socks on.
It's a terrible idea if you've accidentally wandered outside with your socks on a lot. You'll get all sorts of thorns and burrs in there, and half the time you'll be stepping on some dirt or puddles. At least try wearing slippers.
5. Treat your knit socks like regular socks.
It seems counterintuitive, after all, I just gave you all the instructions on how to take care of them. The truth is, there's no point in having all these beautiful hand-woven fabrics that you've never used. So you might as well have some fun along the way. After all, it doesn't matter if an item that is supposed to be worn is worn out.
6. Do not store your knitted socks arbitrarily.
Treat your hand-knit socks like a nice sweater. Before you put them away, give them a good wash, let them dry thoroughly, and store them in an airtight container with a cedar sachet or something that will repel small animals. You don't want to open up your precious box of knitted socks when winter rolls around, hoping for warm toes only to find they've all been devoured by moths, silverfish, or carpet beetles.
Carefully consider whether to use any cleaners and if so, which ones.
Some dyes may peel or be damaged if you use a mild detergent. Therefore, try to avoid using detergent on socks unless they are in really rough shape. A prolonged soak in a bath of cold water, followed by gentle hand agitation and light rubbing with your thumb is usually sufficient to remove any grime. Because wool is a natural odor-resistant material, socks usually don't stink too much. If you're concerned about the dye not fading, try soaking some leftover yarn first.
